What's the backstory of Good Team?

While not something I talk much about, I’ve always had one foot in the charity space. This has consisted primarily of longterm relationships with the organizations for which I volunteer, and on a few occasions paid administrative roles.

This passion culminated when I moved back to the Bay Area and decided to explore a few of my long-held theories on how volunteering could work better. What started as curiosity, led to throwing myself in the proverbial fire; designing programs with a dozen different charities, coordinating large groups of volunteers, and becoming a humble student of the volunteer space.

After planning countless corporate events from the charity side, an opportunity presented itself in the roadblocks I noticed continually popping up on the company side. This was the seed that became Good Team.

Who is Good Team for? What is the business strategy?

Any company interested in team building and/or philanthropy is a potential client. That said, there are two categories of businesses for which Good Team can be especially helpful:

1. Smaller companies

While there are are handful of consultants that promise these type of programs, they generally target large companies for massive contracts. With our process and price point (
see next question), this type of custom assistance is now available to smaller entities for the fist time, including startups, family businesses, restaurants, etc.

This is not to say we are opposed to working with larger companies. Large scale / low-input programs and single department projects that can be scaled up are well within our toolbox. That said, larger companies typically have existing CSR infrastructure and are thus more resistant to bringing in outside help (however needed it may be).

2. Early growth

The phase of growth where businesses start feeling the need to improve company culture, but have not yet hired people to do so, is the ideal target for Good Team. For these companies a Good Team program can indefinitely automate a significant portion of the team-building workload, at the very least saving a nontrivial amount of time and labor — if not an entirely salary.

Companies in these niches are difficult to identify from research. The hope is that through word of mouth (i.e you) we can find potential clients as the situations naturally present themselves

What would you pitch my contacts?

A fair question if you are considering connecting me to your network is 'what exactly does the pitch look like?'

Initial calls and emails are always free. During which I will be happy to provide general advice and help your contacts decide whether or not this is a good fit.

Should we proceed, the next step is always a
straight forward report analyzing their situation. While extremely in-depth on my end, for the company this is both low-cost and low-commitment. It first evaluates what the team would like to do and what they are capable of, both in terms of abilities and logistics. I then organize the available options (which always includes some level of proactive ideation with the charities) and present them along with my recommendations. This is followed by a step-by-step implementation summary, describing what needs to be done next.

And this last step is a key inclusion, in that it allows more budget conscious clients to use this low-cost report to set the program up totally on their own.

As for larger companies, or any company would rather outsource the process in its entirety, this report can serve as a feeling out period for a more in depth project. Implementation generally takes 1-2 months and needs to be overseen in person.

Is this really that hard to do? Why is this needed?

What Good Team does is essentially event planning. Except these events are recurring, passively sustainable over a long period, and have some level of flexibility in terms of attendance — none of which are easy to arrange. These events also carry the added complexity of working with charities; which, due to the nature of the work, can be a bit more eclectic and bring a unique set of challenges.

So while there are definitely people in every company who are great with the logistics side of things, it’s the combination of these skills with knowledge of the charity space and experience in creating these types of programs that make Good Team unique.

For more on this, please refer to the
FAQ on the main site (Why can't we do this internally?, What if we already have someone in charge of philanthropy?).

Why is this important?

Americans are working more than at any point in the last 80 years. This means less free time, which means things like volunteering get pushed to the very bottom the list.

And then in most cases, fall off the list entirely.

As you can see in the
video on the main site, about 4% of people do half of all volunteering (1). And while 90% of people want to volunteer (2), only 25% of those able to find any way to do so — even just once a year (3). Most people cite time as the preventing factor.

Efficient, impactful workplace volunteer programs could be the answer to solving this problem. Especially since there are so many benefits to the company as well.

And while this is a relatively small consulting operation at the moment, the impact of making these programs an ubiquitous part of the business landscape cannot be overstated. This is the movement Good Team aims to start.

What happened to Bridge?

For those who are familiar with Bridge, the platform we were building is still there. Like so many business which rely on in person activity, the pandemic put everything on hold. I am hoping we can relaunch soon. At some point Good Team and Bridge could certainly help each other.
